Developers gain new tools as AI video generation becomes more affordable and mobile-ready

Google has rolled out updates to its Veo 3 AI video generator, introducing vertical video support, higher resolution outputs, and lower pricing. The changes make Veo 3 and its faster, lower-cost counterpart, Veo 3 Fast, more practical for developers creating content for mobile-first platforms such as TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts.

The announcement appeared on Google’s developer blog, where the company confirmed that both models are now “stable and ready for scaled production use” in the Gemini API.

Vertical Video Support

One of the most notable updates is the addition of vertical video. Developers can now generate videos in a 9:16 aspect ratio, the format most widely used on smartphones and social apps. By setting the aspectRatio parameter in API requests, developers can create content tailored to mobile viewing.

Vertical video has become the dominant format on platforms where audiences consume short-form content. Google’s move allows Veo 3 users to meet this standard without additional editing.

Higher Resolution Options

The update also introduces 1080p resolution for generated videos, an increase from the previous 720p limit. For now, the full high-definition option applies only to 16:9 horizontal videos. Vertical videos remain at lower resolutions.

The ability to produce 1080p outputs is a step forward for developers working on professional or commercial projects. To demonstrate the improvement, Google released sample clips in the new vertical format, including one featuring a rock climber noting, “Veo 3 is now, like, 50 percent cheaper and higher quality, so go build.”

Google Veo 3 Brings Lower Pricing for Developers

Pricing has also been reduced for both Veo 3 models:

  • Veo 3: $0.40 per second (down from $0.75)

  • Veo 3 Fast: $0.15 per second (down from $0.40)

The Veo 3 Fast option provides quicker, lower-quality results for budget-conscious projects. The standard Veo 3 model, now nearly half its original price, offers higher-quality video at a more accessible cost.

These reductions may encourage more developers and companies to experiment with AI video or scale projects that were previously cost-prohibitive.

Industry Context

The addition of vertical video reflects broader industry trends. In June, Google confirmed that Veo 3 would be integrated into YouTube Shorts later in the summer. By making the same format available through the Gemini API, Google is enabling developers to integrate the feature into their own apps and tools.

Competition in AI video generation has been accelerating. Companies such as OpenAI, Runway, and Pika Labs are also advancing tools that allow users to produce video from text prompts or simple inputs. Google’s combination of lower costs and practical features shows it intends to remain a leading option in this growing market.

Implications for Creators and Businesses

While Google’s announcement focused on developers, the changes will also affect creators, marketers, and businesses. Lower costs and higher quality could reduce reliance on full production teams, allowing faster and more affordable content generation.

For app developers, Veo 3 integration could offer end users professional-grade video tools. For individual creators, the improvements may make AI video a practical addition to their workflows.

Looking Ahead

Google’s Veo 3 update highlights the rapid evolution of AI-driven media tools. Vertical video support, 1080p resolution, and reduced pricing address three of the most pressing demands from developers and creators.

As short-form video continues to dominate online platforms, tools like Veo 3 are likely to play a central role in content production. With costs dropping and features improving, AI-generated video may soon shift from experimental technology to a mainstream option for businesses and creative industries.
